Rio De Janeiro Transport

Rio de Janeiro Transport - There are a few ways to get along this bustling city, it’s a matter of pinpointing how to get around and how much bustle you can handle. There are hundreds of local buses and routes. Buses are inexpensive and can take you anywhere your heart desires. You won’t be able to use a route map, but you can view a list of routes to the most popular sights at the tourist bureau. When you board the bus, you enter at the rear, pay the attendant and then pass through a turnstile, - later you exit through the front. Bus drivers will speak no English.

Rio's Subway System, the Metrô (021-292- 6116) is a clean, safe and efficient means of transport. You would be as well to arm yourself with a map (available from a Tourist Office – see listing of offices in Section “Tours”). Only some metrô stations have maps. Trains run daily from 6 am to 11 pm along two lines: Linha 1 and Linha 2. A single metrô ticket costs R$1, a 10-pack is R$10.

If you’d rather have someone else do the driving, contact Turismo Clássico Travel, located at Av. Nossa Senhora de Copacabana 1059, Suite 805 at 021-287-3390. This is one of the country's most reliable travel and transport agencies, which can arrange a driver for you. An English-speaking guide is available upon request.

Yellow Taxis have meters that start at a set price and offer two rates: "1" for before and "2" for after 8 pm. The "2" rate also applies to Sundays, holidays, the month of December and the neighborhoods of São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, as well as when climbing steep hills. Charts are posted in the taxi stating the current fares on the inside of the left rear window. Very few cabbies speak English. Contact a taxi company, such as Centro de Taxis (021-593-2598), Coopacarioca (021-253-3847) and Coopatur (021-290-1009) or get your hoTelephone to call a taxi for your.

There are buses marked Boa Vista, such as bus 231 from Centro, or Bus no 454 and these go a very scenic rout to Tijuca. For information on the tourist tram.
